I love that there is an increasing "trend" in holistic approaches to healthcare.  I think people are far more in tune with their bodies these days, and that can't be a bad thing!  I have nothing against doctors, but a lot of the time (not in all cases, please don't be offended if you are a doctor!) a GP only has a 15 minute window to treat your problem.  If it isn't a straight forward problem, it is hard to find the root of your issue in 15 minutes....  The human body is a very complicated specimen.  So, often times, the result is a temporary solution to mask your symptoms, without finding the cause.  Our medical industry is in the business of treating illnesses.  It is a multi billion dollar industry, and it is not an industry of keeping you well so you can prevent illnesses, unfortunately.  Crazy, right?  But this has resulted in an increase of people wanting to look after themselves, and keep themselves healthy.  And I'm one of them! 

I've been seeing BePure on and off for the last couple of years.  I take a lot of their supplements, and really believe in what they do.  Since I've started training for the Auckland full marathon this year (I'm sure a lot of you know, as I've been bleating on about it a bit!), I really want to get my nutrition in check while I'm training and do a bit of an experiment.  I've had a few months of being pretty relaxed (that's a really nice way of saying I've been lazy) and have been eating a lot of food that I wouldn't normally eat, and as a result, put on a couple of kilos.  Nothing major, and I'm not too worried about it, but I thought it would be really interesting to do a bit of a "before and after" with BePure.  I had an initial 90 minute consultation with the lovely Sarah at BePure's Auckland clinic and told her about some little niggles I'd been having (not a lot of energy, and excess mucous in the back of my throat ha which I know is disgusting, but hey we're all friends here!).  I have a feeling they are down to my diet, so we've embarked on a series of tests to see what's going on in my body!  These include:

1. Poo samples.  Over a 3 day period, I took 3 samples, and sent them back to BePure, who then send them over to the States to get analysed to check on my microbiome (basically the mix between friendly and un-friendly gut bacteria), which could be related to a few things around my energy levels and my mucous for that matter.  One of the grossest things I'e ever done to be honest, but necessary - little did the poor courier driver know...

2. Blood Tests.  I've got a big list of foods that I need to incorporate for a couple of weeks, before I get a blood test done to see if I am intolerant of any specific foods.  BUT you need to be eating them for the test to pick them up.  I'm not complaining...  Hellooooo bread and cheese!

3. DUTCH test.  This one here is super fascinating, and I can't wait to get the info back!  It's basically a urine test that you do at a certain stage in your menstrual cycle that gives you a complete hormone .  It's supposed to be one of the most accurate, as previously hormones can be a nightmare to figure out.  I'm sure there are some women reading this who have had hormone problems, whether it be from the pill, or a bit of stress - these can all wreak havoc on your hormones, so I'll be really interested to see how mine are doing.

So, this is all step one!  I'll update the blog once I've got all the results back, and have a plan in place on how to combat any issues that show up as a result of the tests.
